![]() ![]() Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even if I was slightly hesitant at the start. The story in itself is quite unique and well written - aspects of it actually reminded me of Cecelia Ahern or Helen Fielding's style of writing and story telling, which in my eyes is a bonus! ![]() I think this book is aimed more at a female audience, just because there are a lot of romantic aspects to it, and the main plot does resolve around female characters, however I'm sure men can appreciate many of the charms this book has to offer too.ĭon't let the spiritual aspect of this book put you off, it's not all spells and crystal balls. Apart from her psychic ability, I for one found it very easy to relate to this character. ![]() She's 23 years old, stuck in a rut in life, has relationship troubles and just seems out of place. This was a favorite work of Justice William Douglas, Martin Luther King, Jr. He sought to encourage people to notice and saunter, but did not rail against anyone who chose not to. He was a man of his age who possessed a variety of talents and abilities, similar to Jefferson and Franklin. This is not a political or ecological book as many advocates have stated it does support nature, but in a small subtle way. It is his summing up of his thoughts on life: One should saunter through life and take notice one need not go far (as Thoreau rarely left the 25 square miles of Concord and its population of 1,784, according to the 1840 census.) ![]() ![]() It is less well known because it is general, as opposed to singular, in focus. But it is a good place to start exploring his writing because it was his last book, in 1862, published by the Atlantic Monthly shortly after his death. Walking is not as well known as Thoreau's other works Walden, The Maine Woods, and Civil Disobedience. ![]() ![]() We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. This is similar to the Hollywood Blacklist. In Salem, the names of people who confessed to witchcraft were written on a list visible to the townspeople. Therefore, repercussions were inevitable. However, there was no evidence to prove someone’s innocence. In both of these events, people were accused and convicted. This is similar to the witch hunt that took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. During the Red Scare, there was a hunt for communists and spies in the United States. Miller did this intentionally to show the similarities between the two. The Crucible is an allegory comparing Salem’s Witch Trials to McCarthyism. One of the central themes emphasized throughout the play is that hysteria has the ability to tear lives apart while also having long-term repercussions. Miller uses allegories throughout this piece of literature to validate the central theme. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the author uses various literary devices throughout the play. ![]() |
